How Veneers Are Done: Understanding the Basics

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your smile and have been considering dental veneers, then this article is for you! There are many dental concerns people have that lead them to contemplate veneers. So, how are veneers done?

At Boon Dental, we have successfully transformed many smiles with dental veneers. In this article, we discuss how veneers are done, covering the basics, so you can feel confident before you take your next step towards that Hollywood smile.

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are thin shell-like tooth coverings. They are custom-made to create the appearance of your dream smile, taking shape, size and colour into account. When considering how veneers are done, it’s important to know that there are two types of veneers, porcelain veneers and composite veneers. They both cover the front surface of your natural teeth to create an enhanced smile. However, the process for these two types of veneers is different. The objective of both types of dental veneers is to create enhanced, but natural-looking smiles.

How do veneers work?

Veneers work by disguising the appearance of misaligned, misshapen or discoloured teeth. They can even disguise the appearance of small gaps between your teeth. You can get a full set of veneers, a few or just one tooth. Ultimately, veneers work by creating the appearance of your ideal smile.

How veneers are done

The process for getting porcelain veneers can differ slightly from one patient to another. However, the procedure is generally as follows:

  1. Diagnosis and planning
  2. Preparing your teeth and the creation of your custom-made veneers
  3. The fitting of your temporary veneers
  4. Testing the look and fit of your permanent veneers on your teeth without binding
  5. Permanently binding the veneer to the tooth
  6. Adjustments and follow up check up appointments.

Veneers Before and After Process

Diagnosis & planning

Your first appointment will involve a thorough diagnosis and planning. Your dentist will discuss your smile goals with you and whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. During this appointment,  your dentist will take impressions and x-rays of your teeth. They may even study your speech to ensure the veneers will not alter the way you talk.

Preparing your teeth and temporary veneers

At your second appointment, your dentist will prepare your teeth for your new veneers. Once this is done, they will take an impression of your teeth to create the veneers. It can take approximately two weeks for your new veneers to be ready. Your dentist will provide you with temporary veneers to protect your teeth while you wait for your final set to be complete.

Placing the permanent dental veneers

Now comes the final step towards your beautiful new smile! Fitting your dental veneers may take several hours. Your dentist firstly gives your teeth a deep clean to prevent bacteria from becoming trapped under the veneers. They will slightly roughen the surface of your teeth, this helps the veneers to bond to your teeth optimally. Your veneers are first placed on each tooth without any bonding to ensure both you and your dentist are happy with the look and fit. Once you are both satisfied, the veneers are bonded in place.

Your dentist will use a dental bond to cement the veneer to each tooth. An ultraviolet light then aids and accelerates the bonding process. Lastly, your dentist will give your new smile a polish, make any final adjustments, and then you are all done! As soon as you walk out of the dental practice doors, you can eat as usual and show off your brand new smile!

You’ll likely need a follow-up appointment or two so that your dentist can ensure you are adjusting well to your new veneers. With proper maintenance, veneers can last up to 10 years before they need replacement. So, ensuring you keep up with great dental hygiene and regular dental appointments is essential.

And that is how veneers are done!

Who makes a suitable candidate for dental veneers?

Most people are good candidates for veneers. Generally, if you have good oral hygiene and healthy gum tissue, they could be an ideal solution for you if you are suffering from worn, chipped, or broken teeth, or simply aren’t happy with your smile.
